Motivational Interviewing - two days
The theory and practice of Motivational Interviewing is cloaked in a mystique of jargon and specialist language. Using plain language and plenty of practical activities, this two- day programme is highly effective in a wide variety of settings. It can be tailored to specific contexts where there are difficulties in changing entrenched behaviour, such as offending or substance misuse.

Motivational Interviewing for Managers
The premise of Motivational Interviewing is that motivation lies within the individual and cannot be forced on someone. When working with people who may be less motivated for a number of reasons, a more imaginative approach from the manager is likely to pay significant dividend. MI aims to generate motivation within an individual and a commitment to change their behaviour in the workplace. Case-studies and scenarios for role-play are designed to replicate the kind of situations the learners are likely to face.

Drug and Alcohol Awareness
With an emphasis on demystifying and explaining jargon, this one or two day programme can be tailored to a specific context such as bail hostel, young people and so on. It aims to raise the confidence of participants in working with those for whom drugs/alcohol is likely to be an issue. This course links with the Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards, (DANOS), which Alasdair Cant co-developed.

Drugs and Alcohol in the Workplace
Employers are increasingly faced with the difficult dilemma of how to deal sensitively but consistently with staff where drugs/alcohol are an issue. The aim is to give Human Resource managers the confidence to be proactive rather than having to respond once an incident occurs. This one or two day programme is modular in style and takes a methodical approach to this sensitive arena. The course covers:
It is designed to go beyond theoretical awareness raising to practical problem solving. This programme is provided via the Home Office in association with the Engineering Employers Federation (Mid-Anglian Association).

Drugs, Alcohol and the Care of Children
This two-day programme equips workers in the social care setting with the essential knowledge and skills needed to work confidently and effectively. The first day establishes a working knowledge of the most relevant substances. With a firm foundation in place, we apply the principles of child centred assessment to complex problem solving using scenarios and more extensive case-studies. From this, the group develops its perceived good practice principles using national frameworks and guidelines to assist. Finally using learning logs they will identify the main objectives they wish to work on in the weeks following the training.

Effective Negotiating
Because we negotiate on a daily basis, the skills involved can be overlooked. Many significant actions in the workplace are taken on the basis of poor negotiation. Apart from being a disheartening experience it can let down clients and colleagues. This two-day programme builds on a sound theoretical basis of win/win approach to negotiation, planning and conducting the negotiation using proven techniques and strategies to adopt when things are going wrong. The process takes learners systematically through from essential principles to applying techniques and strategies to their own workplace settings.

Project Management
We usually acquire the skills and knowledge to run a successful project over time with mistakes made along the way. This practical course allows participants to examine how they can bring projects large or small to a successful conclusion on time and within a specified budget. Many of the specific techniques around project management can be obscured by terminology. Using plain language and building on participants' actual experiences the course moves methodically through the different stages required to start, progress and successfully conclude a project.

Managing conflict and dealing with difficulties in the workplace
This lively one-day programme builds on the essentials of conflict resolution. Using practical examples and scenarios, it explores some of the more common but sometimes complex difficulties that are encountered between people. There are opportunities for learners to try out the techniques and to problem solve in a safe learning atmosphere. This programme has been tried and tested in a variety of demanding work settings and is popular among senior management as well as operational staff.

HIV, Children and Families
This is an emotive area where workers can feel exposed. The carefully planned programme gradually builds learners' knowledge while exploring attitudes so that they become more confident about working with children who may be infected or affected by HIV. With a solid foundation of knowledge in place, the process then takes learners through experiential learning activities to consider confidentiality, empathic working, health and safety, information in the workplace and policy implications. Case-studies are prepared to adapt as fully as possible to learners' work situations. This programme can be adapted to a nursery setting - HIV for Nurseries, which looks at communicating with parents and practical health and safety issues in more detail.

Team Building
Every team needs some time to step back from the day-to-day activity and take stock. A team programme is carefully put together after in-depth consultation about the particular issues that appear to be emerging. Our years of experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams enable us to select activities that have potential for both learning and enjoyment.

Appraisal Training - half day
This is an upbeat programme that aims to inspire staff to view appraisal as an important investment of their time. It starts from the premise that a good appraisal is a two way process with full involvement of the appraisee. This requires the appraisee to become informed of the process and to do some preparation in advance. The half-day programme takes learners through a process that builds their skills and knowledge, adapted to the organisation's particular appraisal system. If required this can be extended to a full day to Appraisal Training for Managers which incorporates experiential learning via role-play to develop theory into practice as well as opportunity to become familiar with documentation.
